California 70% VLT Fronts — Legal Shade, Real Heat Cut

Front side windows must stay at 70% VLT in California. Ceramic film still rejects infrared heat. Darker rears are legal.

California requires front side windows to allow at least 70% of light through. That is the 70% VLT rule. Windshields can only take a band along the top four inches. Rear side windows and the back glass have no VLT limit.

Dark is not the same as cool

Visible Light Transmission is how dark the glass looks. Infrared rejection is how much heat the film blocks. 3M ceramic films can reject up to 95% of infrared heat per 3M, varying by film and shade, even on lighter legal fronts. That is why Los Angeles and Long Beach drivers keep the fronts legal and still feel the cabin difference.

Rears can go darker

The rears are where most people want privacy. We quote fronts at 70% unless you have a documented medical exemption, then walk the rear shade in the shop — not from a photo on a phone.

Feel it before you buy it

We keep a heat-lamp demo in the shop. No appointment needed to put your hand on the panel. Same-day work is often available if you arrive at opening.
